emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (crazy)
You ever have that time when you're reading a great, long, story and then as you're heading into the conclusion something happens to the love interest of the main character and all you can do is worry if they're still alive and start skimming through the climactic battle just to find out? It sort of put a damper on the story I was reading for me tbh but I do tend to put more of an emphasis on stories that focus on the relationship aspects of the characters rather than the action.

I do make exceptions from time to time if a story has really grabbed me, but I've also dropped reading stories where it seemed to go on forever (which I've come across through fanfic more often than I expected) because I only have so much time to read and I'm sorry but I can't give my limited time to a never-ending story that is longer than most novels by many multiples.

Happy New Year, friends! Going to try to be more active online this year besides twitter. Have started commenting more on Instagram and want to start blogging again so there will be some crossposting in the future. Tumblr here seems mostly the same just a lack of nsfw things. I do want to dust off my dreamwidth/lj but I forgot how more personal it can be adding people on these platforms. I’ve gotten used to the impersonal ways of modern social media. Has probably made it harder to make meaningful connections, as I probably have more legacy friendships than from the newer platforms but I have made a few strong ones from tumblr and twitter tho.

Forgot to post this over here yesterday.. some thoughts on comics currently:

I'm reaching the end of my rope with DC books lately. DC 52 Future’s End is really pointless. Too many characters. And just so many books that are already struggling storywise are forced to put in some weird story “from the future” for an issue? And half of them were mad depressing as hell. It’s crazy how they've sucked the life out of their universe. Linewide outside of a very few books I enjoy, everything else I can’t stand. And even the ones I like (Superman/Wonder Woman for example) I can understand why others wouldn't. It's all hilarious in a sad way. (Yet i'm super excited for their TV/Movie/Animation ventures so it's a weird state for the DCU).

Now books I like and look forward to every month and think you should read:

Lazarus - Find this dystopian future situation quite interesting with families ruling the world and I’m fond of Forever Carlyle. Love the mystery unfolding for her about who she is and her place in the family.

Solar Man of the Atom - Father/Daughter space adventure! Of course it’s more complicated than that as the dad has basically laid a heavy burden on his daughter with what he’s done and he’s along for the ride as her ghost/power spirit annoyance. Love reading this. Might be my favorite monthly book right now.

The Wicked + The Divine - I’m still not completely clear on what’s going on in this book but gods reborn and being big popular sensations up to no good seems to be the gist of it. I love the art though oh so much and the main? storyline with Lucifer and Laura.

Year 5 of Let's pretend I actually watch shows and don't fall miserably behind on everything (but last year I actually did a remarkable job of seeing nearly every new show although 75% of them were cancelled. lol :( ) ( 2010 - 2011 - 2012 - 2013 )

Codes: BOLD (Excited for) ITALICS (Wishful Thinking)

SUNDAY
  • 730PM Bob's Burgers S5, FOX (Currently watching S3)
  • 8PM Once Upon a Time S4, ABC (Haven't seen past 1x06)
  • 830PM Brooklyn Nine-Nine S2, FOX (All caught up. Weird move to Sunday though.)
  • 10PM CSI S15, CBS (Legacy Show. The finale was uninspired.)
MONDAY
  • 8PM Gotham S1, FOX (Curious and nervous to see how the mythology gets interpreted.)
  • 9PM Sleepy Hollow S2, FOX (Haven't watched but plan to catch up shortly)
TUESDAY
  • 8PM NCIS S12, CBS (Legacy show. Revitalized with the Bishop addition. Needed some young blood.)
  • 8PM The Flash S1, CW (Not a fan of the suit but hopeful for the series. Can't wait.)
  • 9PM Marvel's Agents of SHIELD S2, ABC (Was an enjoyable show, can't think of an episode that I didn't care for. Maybe Ward's past?)
  • 9PM NCIS: New Orleans S1, CBS (Spinoff. Scott Bakula. Will give the first season a try.)
  • 9PM New Girl S4, FOX (The show may have hit its peak in S2. With Coach's return, the show feels spread thin with too many characters.)
  • 10PM Forever S1, ABC (Wasn't expecting to watch this show but the previews caught me. Seems like an immortal Sherlock Holmes?)
WEDNESDAY
  • 8PM Arrow S3, CW (Almost done with S1, will probably catch up before Thanksgiving?)
THURSDAY
  • 8PM Bones S10, FOX (This show is starting to get a bit of the whole lather, rinse & repeat repetitiveness to it. Still not fond of domestic Booth/Bones)
  • 9PM Reign S2, CW (This show puzzles me. I hated the pilot but gifs and posts on tumblr make me want to give it another chance. Maybe.)
  • 10PM Elementary S3, CBS (Still a solid show that more people should watch.)
  • 10PM How to Get Away With Murder S1, ABC (The damn tv preview is catchy as hell. I don't know if i want to try it or not.)
FRIDAY
  • 9PM Hawaii Five-0 S5, CBS (Legacy show. I was ready to give up last year but then it sucked me back in somehow.)
  • 10PM Constantine S1, NBC (Curious to see how this goes. Never read the comic or watched the movie. Will give it a chance though.)

MID-SEASON
  • Galavant S1, ABC (The preview online was hilarious. Hope the show is as fun as that.)
  • Agent Carter S1, ABC (I enjoyed the character in the films, will see how it goes on TV.)
  • Hart of Dixie S4, CW (Onto S2 in my catchup. Really liked Season 1, reminded me of oldschool WB shows.)
  • iZombie S1, CW (I never read the comic but I really like the premise. Could be fun.)
emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (tv/film)
Continuing my summer binge watch catch up plans, I’ve seen over 2 seasons of New Girl and am now halfway through Season 3, and after a healthy break of a few months I’ve picked back up Shameless to see the latest season and am halfway through that as well.

First, New Girl.
  • I think Winston is my favorite character now. Him and the whole cat thing, every episode I find myself enjoying his scenes the most. Nick had been my favorite but since coupling with Jess, he just isn’t the same funny character.
  • And Schmidt, I really had liked the twist of hooking up with Cece during Season 1 and getting serious about her but the way they broke that up in S2 & S3 has been more sad than funny and ever since they started doing flashbacks of Schmidt in his fat years, his damn chin looks huge all the time and is distracting me.
  • And Coach. I had really liked him in the pilot but now that he’s back, it just doesn’t feel right. There’s almost too many people now. I’ve noticed less Cece as a result.
Second Shameless.
  • There’s been less, depravity this season, which I’m thankful for, but also I really didn’t like the choices they had Fiona make. Sure she’s had bad taste in men, but she has for the most part been the responsible Gallagher for the most part, and for her to squander her best situation in years/ever so easily … it just didn’t feel true to the character. More like the show making sure that things didn’t get too good for the family and to bring it all back to hell.
  • This seemed to be a recurring theme, like Ian’s return, making choices that he wouldn’t seem to make to bring him back and most likely in even worse shape. And its these odd circumstances that I’m sure are going to pull Lip back away from his escape to college.
  • I think Vee and Kevin are my favorite characters, and the hilarity that is going on with the baby situation and subletting to Mickey and his Russian girls, the confrontation with Stan’s son - they are definitely carrying the lighter side of the show.
emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (Default)
I've been horrible about keeping this journal up to date but I haven't really been doing any original posts on tumblr, mostly reblogging. I have been posting reviews of my first watches of films so that will probably make its way over here too but I'll try to do some more commentary in the future. Now some comments on the TV I've been catching up on this past month since the new stuff has mostly ended.
  • Marvel Agents of SHIELD - I’m still catching up on the show. I just finished 1.16 “End of the Beginning” and still liking the show but I think this is where Captain America 2 gets tied-in next and I haven’t seen that yet so might have to wait awhile to finish.
  • Hart of Dixie - Just finished Season 1. It is so funny how much this feels like old WB show. Even had an episode where a singer popped in to perform. I really liked everything about this show, helped me tolerate all the triangles going on lol. Reminded me of when I enjoyed Everwood.
  • Bob’s Burgers - Finished Season 2. Tumblr pushed me to finally watch it. This is such a good show. I think there’s only been one or two episodes that just were bad.
  • Shameless - Finished Season 3, anxious to start season 4 after hearing all the reactions from friends when it was airing. It’s hard to say how I feel about this show, I care about some of the characters but wow, horrible things happen a lot.

Also on my to-see list this summer but I’ve not started yet:
True Detective
Black Sails
Sleepy Hollow
Vikings
Orphan Black

PB & MIB3

It’s that time of year again. Porn Battle is starting back up and right now it’s prompt submission time.
I’ll be contributing prompts at least. I hope to find time to write a story or two as well.

Finally saw MIB3 this past week and how could you not come out of that film totally behind the Team OK ship? Yeah, it sort of flubs with the storyline of the first film and the love that K left behind, but 2 sort of showed that was a flawed relationship given how they dumped that to bring K back.

But that aside, Young Agent O and Young Agent K were so adorable.

As I was going through my old fic tags to properly tag my [community profile] fandom_stocking drabble, I came to realize several things, one there's quite a few friends I've lost on here over the years, which is sad to think about, but on a lighter note. I was surprised to notice that Man of Steel's release didn't rejuvenate the [livejournal.com profile] 12days_of_clois  community. I remember how Superman Returns really sparked that place for awhile but I'm just guessing most of the people that were there have just moved on? It's a shame, can't say I've really been aware of Man of Steel fic in the same way.

Two Creative Goals for 2014: A Daily Drawble & Write 1k words a day. Originally I was going to do a chapter a day or 3k words a day but to be honest I don't know how long chapters would be and roughly it takes me 2 hours to get over 1k depending on the idea/progress I've made. I wanted to make the goal specific, a realistic length and to publicly announce it. I don't care if its original work, fic, song writing or even blogging/commentary on something I just want to write. And I just want to be able to draw decently. That would be nice. Practice makes perfect. So making an effort to do just that.

The stockings went live earlier this week and I was really excited to find some great fic recs, a shipping graphic and a drabble in mine! Had to share the sweet story that was written so more eyes see it.

Can I have this dance? by [personal profile] navaan . It's DCU Dick/Babs, a bit of quiet domesticity. I miss those two, so this was a nice gift.

I'm participating in Fandom Stocking this year. Here's mine.

There are tons of stockings hung so browse around and see where you feel you can contribute. I'm focused on the upcoming Faberry fandom week at the moment but will be spending the latter part of this month on filling some stockings if I can.

It's been forever since I've done something fandomy like this so I'm hoping it kickstarts me out of my writing funk/malaise I've been in.

  • NCIS - I still watch but it suffers from being unremarkable. I like to rewatch any episode from the first 6 seasons but nothing in the last 5.
  • Bones - I still can’t stand Booth/Brennan domestic scenes but everything inside the Jeffersonian is solid.
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine - The supporting cast is amazing, the episodes are funny and charming. But the main character is hit and miss. Mostly miss for me. Also the secretary, can’t stand her.
  • Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - I’m behind a few episodes but it’s about what I expected. Like Coulson, like Skye, like the pilot. Can’t stand Fitz.
  • Back in the Game - The first new show that I tried and dropped after three episodes. Just didn’t find it funny. Love Maggie Lawson and James Caan but no.
  • The Tomorrow People - Really starting to fall in love with this show. Sure it suffers from CW’s everyone is young and beautiful syndrome, but have been enjoying the episodes and the developing backstory.
  • CSI - I feel like the reinvigorating push that came from adding Danson & Shue is starting to wear off.
  • Once Upon a Time in Wonderland - I’m loving this show but you have to ignore the glaringly obvious green screen scenes when they’re walking around in Wonderland. Jafar is crazy, Alice is courageous, Knave is interesting.
  • The Crazy Ones - It’s on shaky ground of being dropped. It’s very hit and miss, maybe every other episode is good? Some episodes only one moment is good, the rest of the time it’s like a chore to get through.
  • The Michael J. Fox Show - This is a charming show. It reminds me of Modern Family, but not quite as funny. Great cast.
  • Elementary - This show is my favorite show. Every episode is great and I hope it starts getting recognized for it.
  • Hawaii Five-0 - This season has been so much better than last season, when I was ready to drop off from boredom.
  • Dracula - I don’t know how to feel about this show. The story is picking up its pace since the disjointed first episode, but I really don’t care about Grayson and his fascination with Mina Murray. I’d find it more interesting if Grayson somehow found himself falling for the enemy, Lady Jane Wetherby.

emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (superhero)
Firstly, popped in Smallville S2 DVD and watched 2.04 Red today during my cardio workout, which is where I left off in ‘His Girl Friday’. One step closer. Excited to step back into that world. My ideas for Lex, Lana, Pete, The Kents as supporting characters for Chlark needs to see fruition. *bounces*

And secondly, once I actually have fic to post and contribute again I wanted to start posting at Ao3 but had a question to those that move stories over to Ao3. Is there a preferred method that won’t flood/overwhelm people? Or is that not even a worry and you can just upload the chapters all at once and it won’t mess up alerts or update categories.

I don’t know I’ve never actively searched for fic on Ao3, I tend to get links to stories there and that’s how I read fic there. I want to move over a story once I get the next chapter done and just want to do it right?

emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (smallville)
So I've pretty much become all fic read out which is both good and bad because I love reading so much, but I can now use my free time to do some writing instead.

As a result I've started rereading 'His Girl Friday' and I am utterly cringing at some of the mistakes left in the early chapters: missing words, mixed tenses - those little things that sometimes you miss as the writer when you proofread because you know what you're expecting to see in the story and your mind can fill in the blanks for you.

I remember feeling like I improved on my proofreading during the later chapters, but I guess I'll see when I get there. And yes, my intentions are once I've reread the story to actually continue it. Not a new story from me, I know. but we'll see.

Hope those that celebrated had a fun 4th of July!

Fretting that I'm being lax about updating on here. The lack of writing to publish is a big part of that, which I hope with my recent purchase of an iPad(!!!!) giving me back computing portability in a size bigger than a phone I'll be more able to find time to write away from my desk.

I'm also hoping this ipad is going to give me opportunity to draw a bit too. There's some transformation i'm going through at the moment where digital technology just seems so much more convenient. Like I'll look at my bookshelf and see a few unread books (ASoIaF) and just think, man I wish I had the digital versions so I'd read them on my iPad/phone instead of having to lug that heavy hardcover around and need the light still on. LOL.

I mentioned this on twitter/tumblr and got a few suggestions but just in case there's anyone here that doesn't follow me there, I'm new to the iOS world so if you have favorite apps that you can't live without and would like to recommend I'm always looking for new apps and I'd rather not waste money on bad ones you know? :)

I'll try to do better to at least forward any original posts that i put on my tumblrs over here like I promised I would. Most of my fanfic tumblr lately has been posts on shipping after having seen Man of Steel and OZ. I'm behind on my reading but I'd like to rec more than I do, but lately all I've been reading is either Glee/Mass Effect fic with a dash of Star Trek. And my main tumblr is full of reblogs with a dash of instagrams and an occasional life blog post so I definitely can do a better job of that. I think a lot has to do with my dissatisfaction with the mobile interfaces of dreamwidth/livejournal, now with a bigger ipad screen I'll feel more comfortable.
emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (harry potter)
This month I'm trying to take advantage of my free time by assigning myself some fun entertainment challenges to accomplish on a daily basis so I don't just waste away that time with just watching reruns or zoning out on tumblr/fanfic. Two challenges in my head, both created from the fact that I feel like I've fallen behind in both of these areas and I miss doing them. Pushing myself to meet goals is usually when I'm at my most productive, so I'll be interested to see if that works for funsies stuff too.

The first is a reading challenge. You see, I feel like my book reading time has suffered in recent years in favor of online material with the ease of access from my phone. Between articles, fan works & social media updates I probably read more words now on a daily basis than ever before. Yet books are not really a part of it.

But it would be nice to add more published work to my reading list that isn’t limited to comic panels. So starting this month I am challenging myself to reading at least one chapter a day from one of the many unread books I own in the hopes that like many of the other lifestyle changes I’ve made over the last year it will eventually become a habit. I also feel like because of my fanfic reading tendencies, I've been reading a lot of badly written stuff that it might be good to mix in some at least smartly edited material to remind me of good writing habits as well lol.

And the other challenge I’m giving myself this month is to jump back into anime after a really long time being out of it for the most part. I was a pretty enthusiastic budding otaku right out of high school and made some poor buying decisions during that time (stupid vol 1 + art box deals) but that’s neither here or there.

Anyway being on tumblr has kept anime on my periphery for awhile now, reminding me that I once was more familiar with the properties and i finally decided to go ahead and subject myself to the deluge once again starting with the last year i remember watching shows from. That is probably crazy to start with such a backlog but I’m weird like that sometimes when it comes to being a completist.

So the plan is to try one show a day time permitting, at least 3 episodes which is about 1 hour and make my way through the long list and see what i missed and what is worth watching. I’ll either blog on my tumblr or tweet my thoughts. Probably at the end of the week or month I'll throw up an overview here on DW/LJ. Hopefully this will be fun and something I can keep up on.
emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (mass effect)
My birthday is in 7 weeks and I am 3 lbs away from hitting the fitness goal I made last July. It's crazy to think that I've been living this new healthier lifestyle for 10 months. I remember how much of a struggle it was early on when I was adjusting to new eating habits and now it's just a way of life and I find food much more fascinating now, which might be funny but learning about serving sizes is enlightening.

Now 4 months of running on a treadmill since one came into my ownership and I've been doing about 40-45 mins of near daily cardio, in that 4 months I've comfortably cut over 4 minutes from my mile pace and I'm almost up to 4 miles a day. I'm so pumped about my progress!
--
Another animated property that has caught my fancy of late is Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.  Between nostalgic love of the original from my childhood, and a slight aversion to the animation style I stayed away from the show for a long while. But last month or so I happened upon a marathon of episodes and left it on in the background and started consuming episodes left and right.

I love that It doesn’t play down to the audience and I like what they’ve done with the characters and the relationships, like turning April into a teen as well as having Donatello crushing on her, Splinter being fatherly to her or the dynamic between Leo & Karai. Unfortunately there have been so many iterations over the years that it’s hard to discover fic on this newest series but I hope to find some fandom developing around the show finally.
emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (comics)
For the last few years I’ve slowly developed a noticeable sleeping problem. Later and later I fall asleep, catching up for the short sleep on the weekends or free afternoons. I try to go to bed at a normal time, try not to workout late anymore, put on music to sooth, read in bed but lately it isn’t until light starts to breakthrough that I finally get some rest.

What was it about the night & silence that was wrecking havoc on my sleep? And then I came to a conclusion the other day. I miss the noise of nature. And this clue has been there all along. You see years back at the start of this mess, there were several trees removed from the land and there was an unintended consequence.

The nights used to be filled with the song of crickets and the hoots of owls. Now there are none. And I miss them so.
--
On a lighter note. Finally saw Rise of the Guardians recently and it is so much more wonderful than I thought it would be. And instantly became enamored with the Jack Frost/Tooth(iana?) ship. So adorable and they even have an awesome shipping name: Frostbite (I've also seen rainbow snowcone but that is a bit wordy).

I was telling [personal profile] djtenku  that we might be in the golden age of animated feature films right now. Sure the early to mid 90's Disney was AMAZING, but with how Disney, Pixar & Dreamworks are all cranking out solid hits lately maybe this era can rival that one. When's the last time Dreamworks had a less than stellar animated release? Maybe Bee Movie in 2007?
