Smallville 10.02 "Shield"
Oct. 1st, 2010 09:08 pmAnother great ending that boosted the episode in my eyes. I'm hoping Smallville continues this throughout this final season having final moments that have you cheering at your TV.
I remembered hearing that the Suicide Squad would have a presence in season 10 and apparently they've been around since the premiere. I'm not entirely familiar with the different iterations of the group (not really into following villains) so I have no idea who the guy that tortured Ollie was supposed to be but I immediately recognized Deadshot once I saw that red optical piece slid over his eye. I don't exactly get why they decided to give him a Western Jonah Hex-like look but I was pretty geeked to see him after Clark. (Also wtf bringing back Plastique?! We haven't seen her since season 8 right?)
If this was Hawkman's one appearance for the foreseeable future I'm going to be disappointed that not once was he needed to put on his hawk costume. I loved when he immediately told Lois to "just ask Clark" when she was trying to be vague about her recent observations and how his eternal love story with his wife was retold to Lois. I don't know how long they can really have Lois be a foreign correspondent because Clark by himself doesn't really work without Lois or Chloe around. Now that we're in season 10 I have to admit that 8 & 9 are starting to blend with me because I can't for the life of me remember if the Lois/Clark talkshow episode was in 8 or 9. Either way, that was Cat Grant, and now there's this Cat Grant, who we learn isn't really Cat Grant and I'm assuming won't be around after this episode. It's confusing, but whoever she was filled her purpose which was to start back up the Anti-vigilante stance and introduce that person that is rallying people to that cause.
Going into this season I knew that explaining Chloe's absence was going to cause some problems with believability in the show but that the show would do it's best to work around the lack of Mack situation as best they could to get as much of her presence as they can drag out of her. That said it's really hard to believe that Clark would be so lax to notice her disappearance outside of a few unanswered calls given the chase down he did in the premiere when she went after Dr. Fate's Helmet, or like when she "sacrificed" herself to Davis back in season 8 and how crazy he went. I guess the best thing that can come out of the lack of Mack is that Chloe's absence made it necessary for Tess to actually be a helpful supporter to Clark this time around and take over Chloe's role of figuring things out on the computer for Clark and helping his duties. I'm glad that they had Tess do this in "Shield" and hopefully this will continue for the rest of the time Chloe is gone.
Let's not even go into the Chloe writing that Oliver is the love of her life declaration in the goodbye letter and the clear steering towards Chlollie at such paces that I've never seen. While I like Chloe and wish her happiness, i think it severely hampers the show if ALL OF THE CHARACTERS ARE ATTACHED. Lois/Clark now Chloe/Oliver ... Oliver is supposed to be the wandering ladies magnet. Now we're down to Tess, and believe me ONCE YOU GO ZOD YOU CAN'T GO ... something. Especially since she's probably going to be busy playing mommy to Alex.
I will say digging the new outfit for Clark. Perfect end to the episode and I hope that's the outfit for the rest of season 10/until the final suit. The red jacket with the embossed Shield on it, and the nice return to Red & Blue. Only thing that would have made it perfect was some yellow but yellow pants might have been a bit much. lol.
ETA: WHOA WHOA WHOA. Did they cut out a scene? I just watched this Shield trailer and check out where Clark went in his new outfit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxpOBE2zbc
