Merlin 3.03 "Goblin's Gold"

emeraldstagAfter seeing the preview last week, I have to say I was more than a little worried about this episode. I've long since gotten used to TV special effects, and Merlin has gotten better over the years so I was fine with the Goblin but going into a clear one off episode had me nervous. I shouldn't have been. Just like last season's two-parter with the troll marrying Uther, this Goblin episode was hilariously entertaining and a well needed break from the doom and gloom of the last few episodes going back to last season. A time without evil!Morgana grins is welcome.
Arthur's moments stole the show for me. I usually enjoy the most when he and Merlin have those buddy scenes (like last week's cleaning Merlin's face with the rag or this week's Merlin not fully curing Arthur of his donkeyness). But he had some standout moments by himself, especially once Goblin!Gaius decided to give him donkey ears. The braying when Gwen discovers him was fantastic.
Gaius. Normally an episode that revolves so heavily around Gaius would be not something I want to watch, but the perfect thing about this is with the Goblin possession Gaius wasn't Gaius! Being the practical jokester out for money, licking gold and tricking people was hilarious. His facial expressions were borderline creepy but an outstanding change of pace from his usual frown-filled demeanor.
