emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (comic book)
[personal profile] emeraldstag
It's Oscars night so knowing that I'm not going to get anything else done for the next 6-7 hours I thought I'd look back on my comic reading in February and comment on the highlights and lowlights while I watch.

Week of February 3:
Fave - (Dark Horse) Mass Effect: Redemption #2 - Last month's first issue was one of my top reads of the month and nothing changed with this next issue. My favorite character to interact with in ME1 is Liara, so to have a story that is following her search for Shepard is fun and enjoyable. It makes me want to play the game as much as I can until I finish it. And it didn't hurt that it was a very average week in my stack.
Best DC - Blackest Night Wonder Woman #3 - After a month with no Blackest Night recognition, I felt this last issue of the Wonder Woman tie-in mini-series was the best of the rest.
Bad Marvel - Marvel Heartbreakers #1 - It bummed me out that the stories in this anthology (like the Peter/Mj/Gwen story I got this to read) were previously digital exclusives that I'd seen before and that took me out once I'd realized I'd read the stories inside already.
Bad DC - Question #37 - A Blackest Night tie-in and I didn't like it one bit. I've really been skimming through the Question backups that have been in Detective Comics and I did the same here despite Huntress' inclusion in the story.

Week of February 10:
Fave - (DC) Batgirl #7 - What I loved so much about the book was the interaction between Stephanie with Dick & Damian and then later on Dick w/Barbara & Steph w/Damian. This book really brings the good times to the Batfamily and it might be my favorite issue of the series so far. The only negative I had was Barbara's conversation with Dick at the end where it seemed to allude that she was moving on with her life aka stop living in the past and apparently Dick is that? I think DC loves teasing couples and then keeping them apart. Is there a pairing together outside of Superman/Lois? Maybe Guy/Ice but they barely see each other now.
Best Other - Invincible Presents Atom Eve & Rex Splode #3 - I liked the look back at a younger/inexperienced Atom Eve and the art was decent, but what perhaps was the steal of the issue was in the letters section where Kirkman revealed that in the early times of Invincible when things weren't going so well he was thinking of finishing the series and rebooting it as an Atom Eve series with all the same stories but from her perspective.
Bad DC - Secret Six #18 - I think I'm dropping Secret Six. Ever since Final Crisis that got rid of Kirby's New World characters meant that Knockout was gone from the team, my interest in the group has waned and now it's to the point where I really don't care anymore.
Bad Marvel - JSA All Stars #3 - I still can't get around the art, I do like the feeling that Magog will be leaving the team and book. I hope that is true because he is not appealing at all and the whole fractured aspect of the team (infighting) even after the split is not enjoyable to read at all. Johnny Sorrow looks like an interesting character with the whole floating mask thing. I'll stick with it because it has some of my faves: Power Girl & Stargirl.

Week of February 17:
Fave - (Dark Horse) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #50 - I am sad that Dark Horse is wrapping up this series at issue 50. This was the one book that I stuck with throughout its run (I've read about half of Legacy), and I've really come to like Zayne Carrick and Jarael. This issue was a great finishing touch to the story and Zayne's acceptance of Jarael and rejoining her. They've become one of my favorite SW ships and I hope there is something done with these characters down the road. I'll be checking out the writer's next SW series "Knight Errant" that will be starting up and hoping I can get behind those characters too. Great stuff.
Best DC - Tiny Titans #25 - I know this book is intended for young kids, but I LOVE IT. The simple fun of the stories along with all of the characters from the DCU and the hints/nods to storylines in the DCU are fantastic. I enjoyed the kids having the lanterns rings on and expect icons of that in the future. :)
Bad Marvel - Incredible Hercules #141 - I was totally thrown by the ending. I did not expect that one bit and while it was stunning I don't like that turn for Athena. Along with the fact that they've kept apart Cho and the Gorgon girl (can't remember her name) I'm losing favor for what was once my favorite Marvel comic to read every month.
Bad DC - Supergirl #50 - It's fantastic that this new volume of the series has reached fifty issues and that they used a cover by the late Michael Turner but the entire story revolved around some insect infestation that had plagued Lana (glad she wasn't dead) and how Kara saved her. It was okay but then at the end Kara flies away back to New Krypton not wanting to deal with her anymore and I'm just not liking that. Ever since the New Krypton storyline which has Kara at a crux of wanting to please her mother and as a result it's messing with the solo book where things haven't been entertaining in awhile. With War of the Supermen on the horizon I don't see this fact changing anytime soon and that's a shame since they have had a stable creative presence in the Superman Family. Not to mention JMS entering the Superman world soon too. This might signal the beginning of the end of this current Golden era of Superman Books that started with Geoff Johns action run a few years ago.

Week of February 24:
Fave - (DC) Blackest Night #7 - I really dislike events these days because they last forever. BN is going to end up lasting nearly a year when it's done. However unlike other events, Geoff Johns has done a pretty good job of reigniting interest in the series now that we're reaching the end. The deputizing of heroes as lanterns in the face of the heroes being forced into Nekron's control did that and I'm just hoping the last issue keeps the story going. Sinestro becoming the White Lantern seems like the right thing to do and I can't wait to see what happens because of that.
Best Marvel - Fantastic Four #576 - I love this book but it leaves me very befuddled at the same time. Eaglesham's art for the series is great (he draws a fantastic Sue Storm) and its much better than the Millar/Hitch overhyped run. That said, it's a strange book that feels very disconnected from the rest of the Marvel U and I can't decide whether that's good or not.
Bad DC - Teen Titans #80 - This book needs Geoff Johns to fix it. I haven't liked it since he left (what 5 years ago now?) and the fact that they think bringing back Superboy and Kid Flash to the book in the coming months will fix things doesn't sit well with me. It's just following the move they just made a few issues ago that had Beast Boy return to the book and he's just too old to be connected with this group. I didn't like the leadership/power struggle they have had between him and Wondergirl. And don't even get me started on the Ravager backups that haven't put one of my favorite Titans in the greatest of lights. The only issue of Teen Titans that I've liked recently was the Deathstroke/Ravager/Jericho centric one back in December.
Bad Marvel - Thor #607 - one word. CLOR. This book is quickly heading to the bottom of my list, and while I'm not usually a JSM fan but his run of Thor was pretty good and now, UGH.
