Glance Back at the November Stack
Dec. 17th, 2009 09:19 pmTrying something new with the way I talk about the past month's comics - going by weeks and focusing on the highlights and lowlights.
Week of November 4:
Fave - (Marvel) Ultimate Spider-man #4 - I wonder who is the mystery hero that saved MJ and I like that Gwen and Peter still want to be friends and there for MJ and trying to understand why she's done what she has. Entertaining series, still getting used to the art by Lafuente.
Best DC - Batman Widening Gyre #3 - I think the interesting thing about this mini is not Kevin Smith or the art but the use of the women in Bruce/Batman's life. The first two involved Poison Ivy, this one brings Silvia St. Cloud into the story.
Bad Marvel - Captain America Reborn #4 - The delays have killed this book for me. Have no interest in this at all outside of Steve's return and hopefully his reunion with Sharon Carter.
Bad DC - Secret Six #15 - If I'd know this was a guest-written one-shot focusing on Deadshot I probably would've skipped this because he's a character I have no interest in at all. More into the group chemistry than any individual character.
Week of November 11:
Fave - (DC) Batgirl #4 - It's gotten to the point with most comic books, that I have to ignore the relationship aspects of characters in order to enjoy the stories anymore, and this is one of the titles where that happens. The adventure/cape and cowl part is fun to read, and it was great to see Steph face off with Livewire, plus the art is pretty good.
Best Marvel - Daredevil #502 - This is a very strange title, and to be honest it feels very mysterious since Andy Diggle has taken over. It doesn't feel like a lot has happened in recent issues, and I sorta wish the Matt/Dakota angle had been pursued a bit more but alas it hasn't.
Bad DC - Red Robin #6 - I can't stand this title. Tim is written terribly. Somehow Lucius Fox's daughter is now a supporting character and now knows Tim's identity and aliases. As do several other characters. I didn't mind the idea of Tim searching for Bruce, but the path there has been terrible.
Bad Marvel - Cable #20 - The whole Bishop chasing Cable/Hope got old a few issues back, and then throw in the stupid aliens and I very quickly lost interest. To think this has been going on for nearly 2 years, they need to change things up soon or I won't be reading anymore.
Week of November 18:
Fave - (DC) Batman: Streets of Gotham #6 - This looks like the place where we'll get our dose of Huntress, and I'm really glad. I like the character and while everyone keeps flip flopping on her outfit, this story with her and the manbat was great. I even like that Dick!Batman is getting some interacting time with Huntress.
Best Other - Invincible #68 - I think the big thing on this book was what was revealed to us and Eve at the end. Anytime something like that happens I fear the worse, and with Kirkman as a writer I wouldn't put it past him, but this is a non-big two title so maybe this could be good interesting. If it's X-force dupe!baby bad then well I might end up stop reading the book for awhile if not completely like i've done with X-Force for the most part.
Bad DC - Supergirl #47 - I was really beginning to like the character of Alura, Kara's mother & widow. Then we get the wonderful look into how Kara's father wooed Alura and then we see how she compromises her own integrity in the end that he had built up in her. Still wish there was better art on the book.
Bad Marvel - Spider-Woman #3 - I can't stand the art. I know Alex Maleev is supposed to be well regarded as an artist but it's just not the right feel for a superhero book in my eyes. Also not helping this title is the fact that it should've come out much closer to the end of Secret Invasion when people cared about Spider-Woman.
Week of November 25:
Fave - (DC) Gotham City Sirens #6 - What was great about this story was that the villain wasn't the Joker like it seemed but an old sidekick wanting revenge on Harley. It was fun and mysterious and much better than focusing on that stupid Thomas Elliot that's pretending to be Bruce Wayne. I just wish the art style wasn't so cartoony.
Best Marvel - Invincible Iron Man #20 - I think there are a lot of things i liked about this issue, Pepper's mixed feelings on Tony's opportunity to come back and the fact that Thor is basically in the house as Tony's doctor are just some.
Bad DC - World's Finest #2 - Guardian & Damian!Robin, could there be a more dull duo? Spending the entire issue having Guardian chase/capture Damian only for them to eventually get the bad guy and have the Guardian say that Damian still has a lot to go before he's earned the name Robin .... dull to say the least.
Bad Other - Image United #1 - It took me awhile to realize that there would be no Invincible in the book because it was only characters from the artists and not the writer too, so once I got past that I realized there wasn't much going on besides flashy art that didn't do much for me at all.
