It feels strange to be all caught up on a show and not have the opportunity to watch the episodes doubled-up and really get entranced into the show for a short time. It reminds me of when NBC was showing S1 of Merlin this past summer and the week to week anticipation that builds with only one episode, especially one like this week where it is a two-part story arc.
As much of a fan I am of Anthony Head from his Buffy days, I didn't like him being the main focus in Beauty and the Beast: Part One. Maybe it's the limitations of his character in that Uther is the law and his word goes as the right decision, but without much Arthur charm in the episode and the fact that Morgana & Guinevere were practically non-existent, Merlin & Gaius just can't carry the fun factor of the show on their own.
The troll character absolutely gives me the creeps, at times I couldn't even look at the screen as she ate the rotten food and made various disgusting actions/sounds. Even the actress playing the "Katrina" version did a remarkable job of looking hideous, which I completely mean as a compliment.
Again, I think this episode shows more of how Merlin doesn't exactly take advantage of the magical moments Smallville had in its early years with Clark learning his powers. Merlin just seems to know spells or finds a spell and doesn't spend much time going through trials with it or using it again in later episodes. I have no gauge to how powerful or knowledgeable Merlin is and I think that takes away from the show. Eagerly looking forward to the second part next week and I hope I don't get too grossed out. XD
