Reminder that many sites are cracking down on non-logged in activity, and tumblr is extra mean because they slap some blogs with adult content advisories, which does lock them down. I try to find the open links, but not always successfully. Hey and they should open in new tabs now. I hope.

Telanu's Snape/Harry version of lots of Harry Potter canon made much more sense than canon.

I am not going to revisit it via podfic because I am sure there are reasons the good author deleted it -- JKR sucking probably being foremost -- but I remember staying up late to read Telanu's version of Order of the Phoenix and being subsequently disappointed by Rowling's less interesting (and, of course, less sexy) version.

*

The World That You Need is Dira Sudis's take on Aral Vorkosigan/Lt. Jole, Aral/Cordelia; I am not going to read the canon because I can no longer stomach "Biology is the only true wealth," but any canon in which Cordelia forms the concept that now that Aral is dead, she can have endless babies, is not going to live up to Dira's version that has Vorbarr Sultana's underground queer culture.

I have been informed by a reliable source that there is a scene I would enjoy in the novel as published; that's nice. It can continue to exist outside of my sphere of experience, and I will be fine with that.

For once, I am happier to not have it be a completed triangle; let them have their V in peace.

*

The many takes on "All the Avengers live in Avengers Tower (and have a lot of sex)" that the Avengers 2012 fandom inspired beat the shit out of the MCU's lonely, miserable nonteam.

Extra bonus points for all the fic that took Winter Soldier to its "Someone with shared life experience" conclusion. While Steve was, of course, living in Avengers Tower.

*

[deleted entry: Heart in Hand vis-à-vis Heated Rivalry because it is not fair to diss something when I flat-out refuse to engage with any of the canon]

He was born in this dying town that he never got out of. He never became a pilot. He spent his whole life as, like, Hal Jordan the toy salesman. So, he's sort of, I think, weaker spiritually than regular universe Hal Jordan is. He's less of that military guy, he's got less iron in him. I think maybe that there's gonna be stuff we get into that our Hal Jordan can handle that I think maybe the regular universe Hal Jordan couldn't. -- Al Ewing

Summary:

A full grown bison of the ice age could reach 2200 pounds... and that momentum has to spend itself.

Ten to One

Three spears found their marks, each of them able to kill the bull.

The danger was not past.

Jondalar had taken the place near the stream to turn the bison away from using it to escape.

The bull weighed ten times what Jondalar did and had been under full steam in its run when the spears ended its life. The momentum could not be stopped instantly, and Jondalar had already been too close when he cast his spear.

The crash of carcass and hunter left the bison on the bank, but Jondalar himself was thrown into the rapid, nearly freezing cold water and swept downstream even as Ayla cried out his name.

He could swim, wasn't encumbered in heavy furs, but much like the last time — with his brother — there was debris in the water that left its own injuries on top of the full thoracic bruising from impact with the bison.

He had to keep his breath, had to strike for shore —

— and he got caught in an eddy near a boulder from the previous year's flooding, losing consciousness when his head struck it.

Ayla was a woman who always found a way. But though they had managed to pull Jondalar from the water, even with her knowing how to force the water from his lungs, this was not something she could fix. When she knew there was no life, she felt numb, a little broken inside, and yet.

Baby had brought the man of the Others to her. That man had then brought her to the Lion Camp. Now, the man was dead because of the totem of Brun, her first leader, a man she respected even now.

Ranec remained with her as she sat beside the body, thinking about that fact. She had managed to tell Talut that the kills should be worked. There was no sense in wasting the effort, though it was almost a general consensus to not harvest the body of the one that had caused the death of a hunter.

"Go. Help. Must… dig." She looked for a place that she could do so, but Ranec rested a hand on hers.

"There's plenty helping butcher," Ranec said. "I can dig with you, since he is not of the Mamutoi, so our ways would not be right for him."

It made her eyes water, but she nodded. "Dig, put in hole, cover. Speak to spirits, the Mother, so his spirit finds those he belongs with."

It was a very somber group that returned to Lion Camp, nor did Ayla stay inside once the meat had been taken from Whinney's travois and pack baskets. She was considering her next step, now that she had met Others but lost the man that had made her feel so strongly.

The grief was there, not quite as strong as for losing Iza and Creb, for the loss of her son and the Clan as a whole.

Whinney and Racer came and surrounded her, catching her between them, but gently, as subdued as she was.

If they left in the morning, they could be back to their valley in a few days, and still have enough time to save for winter. It would be lean, but they could do it, especially as there was no cave lion to feed this time.

"You could stay," Mamut said, when she looked back at the earth-lodge, and was startled to find the old man waiting peacefully nearby, using a staff to help support himself.

"How you know? Not know for self choice needed."

"The Mother guided me. And … it is not so hard to see, when his loss is hurting you, and you are not sure of the future." He indicated the horses, then her. "A place is here, for as long as you need, to choose the future. Talut and Tulie regret the death of Jondalar but they also believe you should have a chance to heal from the loss here, with us."

Ayla felt the tears coming again, and she held her head high, trying to force them back.

"I think, sleep tonight. Go tomorrow." She shook her head when he tipped his head. "Things, bring, share with Lion Camp, make easier winter."

"And give you time to let go of Jondalar's place in your life as you need?" he asked gently. She nodded, and then the tears refused to be stopped, leading him to reach out, and she hastened to his side, accepting the comfort he offered with a bony shoulder and gentle petting of her hair.

On the day that Ayla returned to Lion Camp, both horses wearing baskets, Whinney dragging a travois, it was a clear day. What little winter had thrown so far had not been enough to dissuade travel at all. Still, she was tired, and only asked that everything be taken from the horses to Mammoth Hearth when many came to help.

Tulie made note of the deceptively simple baskets full of things, noted the number of furs and hides she could see out of the edges of them. She also noted that some of them gave off the scent of preserved food, and was intrigued. There had been much talk about the woman with her horses during Ayla's absence.

If, as Mamut argued, the woman was meant to be dedicated at the Mammoth Hearth, Tulie would need to see about helping Ayla adapt. In time, the woman would need to be counted as Mamutoi… and Tulie saw the wealth of what was brought as another factor in that discussion at some later point.

It was clear that Ayla grieved still, yet Ranec was being mindful of that and merely seeing to helping Ayla settle in. Tulie wondered if the carver had finally been netted, as everyone had thought Tricie had managed. That would also play a part in the future of Ayla at the Lion Camp.

What had happened had been a tragedy, and yet Lion Camp might yet grow stronger for it.

Marvel is publishing a new comicbook crossover between the Star Wars and Marvel universes. Kevin Smith is writing and David Marquez is illustrating.

"Figures like Chewbacca, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia will join Earth-616 — the primary continuity in which most stories of Marvel Comics take place —and mingle with the likes of Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. Meanwhile, Doctor Doom and the Marvel rogue’s gallery will join the likes of Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire."

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Look, I understand fannish obsessions, I really do, I've been guilty of more than a few myself, but Harry Potter fans make comic book, Doctor Who and Star Wars/Trek fans look like models of restraint sometimes.

12th August 2026 -Late addenda to the above, in the interests of fairness : It appears there might be less to this story than the media would have us believe

I watched this recognising some moments from both sides, the show you loved as a kid maybe not being as awesome as you thought, and watching someone else's favourite show from when THEY were a kid, and... it's just not the same

Star Trek Strange New Worlds continued it's canter through film genres this week with their take on "The Hangover" and "Dude! Where's My Car?". Not a huge of this one, but full marks to Rebecca Romijn for going that extra mile and learning ALL the words. This weeks looks to be them going full film noir, and I mean FULL noir!
