June Comics at a Glance
Jul. 10th, 2010 04:58 pmWeek of June 3:
Best - (DC COMICS) Adventure Comics #12 - I think I commented the week this came out how it was my favorite issue since Geoff Johns left the title at the end of last year. The story of Superboy's early adventures with the Legion, all the flirting that goes on and Clark feeling accepted amongst his peers was like an instant classic in my book. Fantastic issue.
Worst - (IMAGE COMICS) Invincible #72 - Others might disagree with me but I can't stand the issues like this (and what I'm expecting from most of the Viltrumite War) where it's all punching/smashing (ala Hulk) with blood and guts. It's just art in these issues and I want to read my comics.
Week of June 9:
Best - (MARVEL) Rawhide Kid #1 - I've heard apparently that the writer of this title may have been a part of some insensitivity perhaps even with this character but I never read that. This issue was really fun and I enjoyed the banter between the Rawhide Kid and Annie Oakley.
Worst - (DC COMICS) Batman #700 - The reason for this is mainly because I am sick and tired of everyone trying to push the Batman Beyond future as canon. I plan to cover this more in a future rant but that future is so drastic and full of despair that I can't imagine wanting that for these characters. It's a great elseworld and let's leave it at that please.
Week of June 16:
Best - (BOOM! STUDIOS) Darkwing Duck #1 - I loved the TV show growing up and I can't tell you how thrilled I am that they've created a book series to continue with the characters. I really wish Disney had done some type of attraction at Disneyland for this franchise like they did for the Rescue Rangers.
Worst - (DC COMICS) Joker's Asylum Harley Quinn #1 - This might be the case of being influenced by BTAS but I never pictured Harley as a homicidal maniac that would murder people so easily as this book had her gunning them down. Sure crazy, and violent but never deadly.
Week of June 23:
Best - (MARVEL) Namora #1 - I'm sure there's an irony in the fact that I adore Namora so much while I can't stand her cousin Namor at all. The issues of Incredible Hercules when she was interacting with Herc were some of my favorites of that series (what happened to that book?) and this one was a fantastic tale that even got emotional when she was embracing "Namorita" and knew she wasn't real.
Worst - (DC COMICS) Batman Return of Bruce Wayne #3 - Others seem to disagree with how the title continues to sell out but I have no interest in these Bruce Wayne incorporating Batman in some way in different times/eras. I'm really not looking forward to Bruce coming back but there's no stopping that is there.
Week of June 30:
Best - (DC COMICS) Wonder Woman #600 - I know there's controversy about the new outfit (which I plan to blog about eventually) but this book had so much great art that I had to make it my top pick. I especially enjoyed the Amanda Conner art in the WW/PG story.
Worst - (DC COMICS) Madame Xanadu #24 - This is a book I mostly get because of the interesting fantasy aspect and the usual great art, but I don't like issues where the main character, Nimue, is left for a small part due to the story being about this one character going crazy in some way and it ending up being some cause of magic. This has happened several times over the last few issues and I'm not interested in that. I want more Nimue.
