Clark turned towards the window, the rumble of a car engine approaching gaining his attention. He quickly recognized that the car belonged to Lois; clearly she had noticed Clark's no-show at work and had come to get him. He listened to the vehicle make its way down Hickory Lane before coming to a stop just outside the barn doors. He winced at the sound of the car door slamming and he subconsciously tensed as the pounding of Lois' pumps entered the barn and made their way up the loft stairs.

“Something funny happened this morning, Smallville,” announced Lois, stepping into the loft with hands on her hips. “I had this surprise for you, so I went to my desk and surprise, surprise you weren't there.”

Clark coughed awkwardly. “Yeah ... well I-”

“Not finished,” interrupted Lois, snappily. “As I was saying, your desk was empty but I, thinking the best of you, figured you were out 'blurring' and I decided to wait. And wait. And still no Copy Boy Clark showing up. My coffee got cold, I ended up making excuses to Tess for you not being there and I had to decline Chloe's invitation to lunch to come out here and get your broody ass.”

Clark opened his mouth, but closed it quickly as he wasn't sure Lois was done. Turns out he was right.

“I've decided something,” Lois said simply, walking across the loft, sitting down on the faded couch and putting her feet up. “You totally don't deserve me. I reconnect you with all of our friends, got your job at the Daily Planet back, and remind you to call your mother every week. Yet when I'm feeling generous-”

“You're practically the next Mother Theresa, Lois,” commented Clark wryly.

Lois turned her head and glared over at Clark. “No interrupting, Smallville. I thought we went over this before in your playhouse, in this relationship I lead and you follow, I talk and you listen, I write and you spell check.”

Clark waved his hands in submission. “I give. I give.” He put on his best pout for Lois. “I think you were going to be generous and surprise me with something?”

Lois sighed but turned back around and reached into her purse. She pulled out a rolled up newspaper and tossed it over her head behind her where Clark stood. “Read it and weep, copy boy.”

Clark caught the paper and opened it up. The main page contained a large photo of Jimmy Olsen with a smaller photo of Davis Bloome to the side and the headline said it all:

Stopping the Cornfield Killer: A Hero's Sacrifice
By Lois Lane

“A front page story for Jimmy. That's really, really great, Lois,” replied Clark, looking up from the paper. “I'm sure Chloe will be happy that he's finally getting his due, even if it's months later.”

“She helped me write it,” Lois informed him. “But that wasn't the surprise surprise. Look on the bottom half of the page.”

Clark quirked an eyebrow but complied, flipping the paper over and finding another image of Jimmy, albeit smaller than the one with the main article. It was the companion to an article that held a surprising headline.

How I met Jimmy Olsen, Good Guy
By Clark Kent

“What is this?” asked Clark. “I didn't write that.”

“Look closer, Smallville,” said Lois. “Is that your name on there? Then you must have written it.”

“But, I-”

“Just read it before you say anything more,” interrupted Lois, her hand up to stop his questions.

Clark looked back at the article, and quickly read it immediately finding it familiar.

“I remember this now,” commented Clark. “But how did you find this?”

“Chloe, again,” answered Lois simply. “She offered it to me, when I was looking for things about Jimmy. Who knew you could write something so eloquent for a wedding gift?”

“It came from the heart, Lois,” replied Clark with a smirk. “You should try it sometime.”

Lois returned it easily. “You use up all of my goodwill, Smallville. Have you figured out the surprise?”

Clark looked down at the paper. “I'm on the front page. An article I wrote is on the front page of the Daily Planet.”

“That's right,” said Lois, pretending to buff her nails. “I twisted Tess' arm and you are now my lapdog.”

“Wasn't I already your lapdog?” asked Clark.

“Yes, but now its official,” answered Lois frankly. “We're a team, Smallville. You had your chance on your own and look how that turned out.”

She stood up from the couch and marched right up to Clark and into his personal space.

“I fixed your social life, and since you won't take any advice with the Blurring, now I'm fixing your work life,” said Lois, jabbing Clark in the chest with a finger. “That's how it works, I lead and you follow.”

Clark surprised her and smiled back. “Why do you always say it like I'm going to hate you for doing all this?”

Lois' eyes softened for a moment before her stern face was in place. “Don't start getting soft on me, Kent. We're on the clock with no time to have Blur play right now. So keep it in your pants.”

Clark chuckled and grabbed Lois' hand. “Whatever you say, Lois. You're the boss.”
