Smallville 9.17 "Checkmate"
Apr. 9th, 2010 10:15 pmA few weeks ago I'm sure I talked about how I wanted to see the diverse levels of age groups in Smallville again like it was in the early seasons (Parents/Lionel, Lex/Young Adults, Clark/kids). This episode made it obvious to me that John Jones would be the perfect choice to fill in that older adult/mentor role for the show. His presence on the show to guide Clark really helps stabilize the concept that Clark is still not yet who he will end up being and I think they've used John Jones much better this season compared to S8. Make him a regular in S10 please!
I didn't really like that Clark/Chloe were suspicious of John Jones. If there's one person on Smallville that should be trusted without a doubt it would be him with everything he has done/sacrificed for Clark. I liked the awkwardness that was in the room with Chloe/Oliver/Clark when Ollie showed up at Watchtower and Clark's facial expressions. I also enjoyed the Clark's rescue of Chloe and how it was portrayed with the still-motion/snapshot/motion-comic like style. And then their scene apologizing to each other and basically how it was told that Chloe is his most valuable asset. ♥
I think Smallville needs to work on their episode previews. The one for "Checkmate" really had me thinking the episode was going to be centered around capturing Chloe and interrogating her and Clark having to search down for her, and really that was only a small part of the show. Next week's return of Metallo should have been the focus but then there were parts that seemed to show whatever progress Clark/Chloe made in this episode disappeared just as fast.
