emeraldstag: Sailor Moon's Usagi & Luna (comic book)
[personal profile] emeraldstag
It's a lot harder to rhyme with months than I expected but with an urge to write I thought i'd write my monthly comic wrap-up to get things started. As usual expect spoilers inside.

Week of January 6:
Fave - (Marvel) Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #6 - I think what made this book great was the reveal of Kitty as the new superhero in town that saved MJ in an earlier issue. It's been awhile since we've seen her do some crimefighting in this book and it was nice to see a return to it. The cast of characters to this book has grown to a point I hope it doesn't take away from the main characters in it.
Best Other - Mass Effect: Redemption #1 - The story that from what I understand takes place between ME1 & ME2, and I'm intrigued by what happened to Shepard and what Liara is doing about it. It's a great companion to the games and is out at the perfect time, makes me want to finish ME1 already so I can move on to the sequel.
Bad Marvel - Cable #22 - This chase has been going on for over 2 years. I lost interest about 10 issues ago and am pretty much just skimming them now. I want Bishop dead, the girl back to the present and Cable wherever already!
Bad DC - JSA All-Stars #2 - I can't stand Magog. I don't know why anyone there would give him leadership responsibilities when he had barely joined the JSA before the whole Gog fiasco or even during, I can't remember, but I hope this arguing/rift can stop being the focus of the book and it can get back to fun stories. It's heading the JLA route real fast, which isn't a good sign.

Week of January 13:
Fave - (DC) Adventure Comics #6 - Two months in a row, AC is one of my faves of the week. We see that Lex Luthor is a bastard and truly evil even to his family, and that Superboy knows which "parent" he follows in their footsteps. Hopefully the series doesn't suffer a drop off with someone else steering the ship, as this is Geoff Johns' last issue.
Best Other - Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31 - The Jeanty cover is spectacular. It's interesting that Buffy/Xander is touched upon briefly, something we all hoped would happen in the early seasons of the show. Now too much has happened and the ship has sailed. Not as excited about the upcoming final arc since the villain identity was badly spoiled.
Bad DC - Secret Six #17 - Not fond of Blackest Night touching this book, and honestly I wasn't liking the direction the book was heading even before. I miss Knockout, and without that relationship with Scandal I'm left with a bunch of sub-level villains I have no interest in.
Bad Marvel - Nation X #2 - I read this title because Jubilee was on the cover and I wanted to read a story with her. What is the story with her? It's her sitting around talking to the younger X-men about her times w/ the X-men and throughout a letter she tried to write to Wolverine which ended up being just a really short note that she had delivered. I miss her too.

Week of January 20:
Fave - (BOOM!) Incorruptible #2 - There's something about this title that I like so much more than it's sister book, Irredeemable. Maybe it's the idea of a criminal realizing things are so messed up that he should do something about it because HE CAN and how he goes about turning his life around for good. Also the idea of an underage sidekick that doesn't understand why he's going good and still wants to do things illegal is hilarious.
Best Marvel - Incredible Hercules #140 - I think what I loved the most was kid!Zeus repairing his relationship with Hera, and explaining how he was a new Zeus that would be more interested in uniting than the misery they've had. And then the results of messing with fire. You're gonna get burned. The look and feel of the book reminds me of Slott's She-Hulk.
Bad DC - Brave and the Bold #31 - The atom going through the mind of the Joker to try to save him. It's as crazy as it sounds, and while an admirable idea - it was not my cup of tea. Still rooting for JMS to have a successful run with the title. Hate that he's off Thor.
Bad Marvel - Mighty Avengers #33 - As much as I like Hank Pym, Jocasta, Stature & Vision, I really think this is a case of way too many Avengers teams and I'm eagerly awaiting for when Siege compresses everything. Also any teamup with Norman Osborn is one too many.

Week of January 27:
Fave - (DC) World's Finest #4 - This book had to battle Justice League for my pick of the week. I loved that a) Superman treated Dick!Batman as an equal b) Dick commented that he learned from Superman too c) Superman/Batman team up!
Best Marvel - New Avengers #61 - Stuart Immonen is a fantastic artist, and i wish he had had a longer run on USM before he moved on. The dialogue was fantastic, even a conversation between Spider-Man and Spider-Woman that was pretty funny and only works because he's now "single" (Also I notice Bendis seems to handle Peter the best, be it 616 or Ultimate).
Bad DC - Superman #696 - I'm tired of General Lane. And I really didn't get the Legion connection at the end. I'm not fond of Mon-El's costume with the tiny blue S, I think they could have designed it much better.
Bad Marvel - Avengers Initiative #32 - I like Diamondback, and the revelation that she's a double agent in the midst of HAMMER, but I did not for one moment buy the ending with Thor getting his ass kicked. It makes no sense, he's a freaking god, and for him to go down makes him seem less powerful than he is.
