Smallville 8.22 "Doomsday"

Tonight, I came to the conclusion that I'm over season finales. I can't remember the last one I've enjoyed and they almost always leave you wanting but not in the good way. Smallville and Supernatural did not prove me wrong.

After "Injustice" last week, I kept saying that I feared we (viewers/fans of Smallville) were in store for a vicious cliffhanger (basically where the finale and season premiere is basically a 2 parter like most Smallville Seasons 1-2, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7) instead of a change of the status quo finale like Season 2 and to a lesser extent Season 3. I'm glad that Smallville went with the status quo change even if it was badly scripted/executed.

Positives:
The deaths. When I realized this whole season had centered around Chloe, I knew she wouldn't die. Sure, she was written badly, but there were some bright spots in all the darkness and the character got to go to different places and face situations she hadn't befored. When I heard two would die and it being a Chloe season I figured it would be the two she was entangled with Davis & Jimmy. I think the producers knew we'd seen enough of Clark "dying" only to be reborn or brought back in some way and to have the main foe by Doomsday it was the perfect left turn to throw into the story. A red herring you might say.

When Jimmy started showing tendencies of not caring about his life and becoming addicted to the painkillers, it seemed plausible that he'd become reckless enough to sacrifice himself to save Chloe and the world. I expected it to involve the phantom zone and have it be that someone had to go in with Doomsday to make sure he went in, and Jimmy would knock Clark out of the way or during the fight realize he had the opportunity and take Doomsday in there and going out the way of a hero.

The way they went about it was priceless. I knew once Chloe started blabbing to Jimmy how she was only doing it for Clark and that she still loved him that the fact that DAVIS WAS STILL IN THE ROOM didn't bode well. I loved that everyone glossed over the idea that Davis would still be unredeemable if separated from the beast (which I still don't agree with, wasn't Davis a creation upon himself? He came from ooze of an egg for heavens sake!) and upon hearing that the love HE OBSESSED about was all a lie, of course he would snap. The fact that he was trying to rationalize all the murders by picking criminals doesn't change the fact that he willingly did all that. Someone wanting help would've locked himself away but no he was OBSESSED with Chloe. Stabbing Jimmy was heartbreaking but I loved that Jimmy returned the favor and then died in Chloe's arms. Still a hero. And I will miss him even if he never really had a good role on the show besides being ignored by Chloe whenever Clark needed something.

Negatives:
The fight. I remember reading the producers saying the battle was going to be huge and great ... and instead it was very underwhelming. The Justice League get knocked out real quick, Clark gets beat down for maybe 1 minute before super lunging Doomsday into the building that exploded. That's it?! Lame.

Legion Cameo. While I liked the idea that Clark saving Chloe had changed things so that he died and why Rokk came back, but outside that nugget of knowledge was there any point to the cameo besides bringing back the legion ring for it's dubious purpose later on?

Lois. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with how they handled Lois the last 14 episodes of the season. I had optomism before when there was news that Erica would be in more than her usual batch of episodes. Then we had the great start to the season with the Lois & Clark Dynamic through the first 8-9 episodes that climaxed with the near kiss in "Bride". From there it was just downhill. They clearly had no place for her in this main story. Of the last 12 episodes she was in 3 episodes basically, wasn't in Turbulence, Eternal, Beast, Injustice and a very small role in "Doomsday". The producers teased the fans would like a moment between Clark and Lois in Doomsday ... that scene where Clark refuses to reveal anything to her and then as the Blur gives her a goodbye letter to publish.. that is it? WTF. And then I can't tell you how stupid it is for Clark to have left the legion flight ring sitting on his desk, and then for Lois to put it on and disappear to the future.. *shakes head*

I know she didn't pop back because they're probably saving that for the premiere, but I can tell you now if she comes back and still doesn't know Clark has powers. I think that might be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. Because I don't see it being believable that she wouldn't know after that.

Tess. Turbulence was the last time I liked Tess. I really thought they had something with going different in having a grey area character that wanted to help Clark instead of hurt him like Lex and have it work even if Clark didn't want it would have been interesting. Instead they seem to be going the same route, with Tess looking less grey by the second with her killing the Injustice members, attacking Lois, refusing Oliver, and obeying that Orb. The joke ran through my head when she tussled with Lois on Clark's desk that they were in a catfight for his affections but after where they've taken her I don't see that happening now, especially with cold detached Clark that is supposed to exist now.

Zod. Really? Do we need to retread that again? I hope it's something else. I liked the idea about Kandor and that had me interested but if it's Zod I don't know if I want that again. I miss the fortress. I miss Jor-El.

Clark/Season 8 End. As thrilled as I was that they made the twist of having Davis' human side be as dangerous as his beast side, haven't we gone down this road before with Clark wanting to detach himself from his friends and family? Sure he isn't putting a red rock on his finger so tha he can still blur 24/7 I assume, but I was really disappointed with that as the result. Wouldn't he want to keep looking for Lois? Or notice that the Legion ring is gone? Also why did Oliver, Dinah and Bart disappear or want nothing to do with them? What about his mom that he calls every few months when he remembers she exists? Also does he even remember Jonathan? It seems every time he talks about his father these days he's talking about Jor-El and not the one that raised him. I was very confused with the ending. I don't understand where they're going from here.
