Smallville 9.19 "Charade", 9.20 "Sacrifice", 9.21 "Hostage", 9.22 "Salvation"
Finale tonight so that meant marathon time! Try to keep my thoughts on each episode short but I did keep notes so doubt it. LOL
9.19 "Charade"
I don't see why there couldn't have been more Chlo-Lo moments like this earlier in S9. I'm guessing it was because Chloe had shut herself in Watchtower and now that she's "seeing" Oliver she is living again. Showing how close and confiding they are/were is what was great about those two cousins. The only thing better than that was having it followed with Clark and Chloe being all snarky about Clark trying to seduce Lois' secret out and pointing out Clark told Lois to lie to him. Entertaining.
I was confused by the beginning with the "you're fired" scene and then no real time marker when the show came back after the opening credits. Also surprised that Smallville couldn't get Chloe an ipad to use in her Watchtower (although knowing how CW treats the show and its budget I guess I shouldn't be). I found Lois' excuse for not wanting to know the Blur's identity to be a bit foolish because since it's possible to know how she has talked to him/been saved by him numerous times, I think criminals would already be targeting her for info on him.
I was not expecting Maxwell Lord to look like he did with the hair and the long sideburns. I like Gil Bellows as an actor, so fantastic choice on that aspect but I guess I'm used to the modern day comic look of Max, having not read older JLA books where he starred. I liked how the S symbol on Clark's Blur shirt stood out in the reflection (still miss the red & blue though). I also liked Chloe's pep talk to Clark. Felt like the good old days with her pumping up Clark like that and her interactions with Lois at the beginning of the episode. Nice choice to end the show with Clark's question "Am I enough?"
9.20 "Sacrifice"
Chloe & her coffee should be a ship. It makes me miss Lana and everyone hanging at the Talon. And Isis, talk about an idea/concept/set that was discarded pretty much after it was created. Looks like the same is happening with Watchtower after this episode and knowing what seems to be the fate for Chloe in regards to S10. It's a shame because it looks like a great set. I wish it had been used more and that more of the cast 'lived' there.
Clark's jab at Oliver felt like another notch in the post labeled 'Clark being OOC in S9'. "I know what you're capable of." Still obsessed with Oliver taking out Lex. Really gives support to the Clex faction eh? And Oliver is still sensitive to tell Clark that the Kandorians aren't the ONLY family he has left. It's like Oliver is the voice of reason and can voice everything Chloe, Lois & Clark can't say to each other. When did I ever think Oliver would be the reasonable one. This show misses Jonathan Kent. He'd have set things straight.
Thought it was interesting to see Stuart's reincarnation inside Checkmate. Only figured out it was him when he went on about wanting to get revenge on Tess. Best thing about the lockdown of Watchtower? The return of CHLOEVAGE! LOL. I enjoyed that and Oliver facing off with Zod and nailing him with the kryptoarrow. Green Arrow 1 - Zod 0, no matter how short the win lasted. I thought the whole Tess/Chloe heart to heart bonding moment was really OOC for both of them. I know Tess has many faces but I couldn't imagine Chloe admitting to anything even if she was close to death. Lastly. Zod is mad, crazy and a manipulator. Faora's sacrifice had me sad.
9.21 "Hostage"
While I miss the lighter colored hair Lois/Erica used to have on the show, I've decided that the ponytail look is what I missed the most about her and I am glad to see it pop up whenever it does. HOT. Something that makes me laugh is that in S8, Jimmy nearly figured out that Clark was the blur because he always wore those outfits, so now that he's all black and moody in S9, he's wearing black outfits as Clark too. Also he reminded me of himself in Exodus as he went to Metropolis or the real young Jor-El in Relic.
I was a little disappointed that they decided to pair up Perry & Martha. It's like they're not even trying with those characters anymore and decided to have them in the same plot of the episode to save space or maybe that's the only way Annette & Michael agreed to come back. Shrug. It was great to see Annette again, although it's easy to see how nearly a decade has passed on the show. Time flies. I thoroughly enjoyed Clark/Martha & Lois/Martha, I just wish they'd been able to throw some Chloe/Martha in too. Would have been awesome.
I liked the homage to Jonathan with Perry coming in through the door with the sun shining on him. Truly reminded me of Pa Kent. I also liked all the feints they put for the Red Queen like pointing at Tess, but I already had figured it out half through being spoiled by enthusiastic people online and just the coincidence of Martha being back in the episode with the Red Queen was too great not to connect the dots. But it was fun seeing Clark connect them too.
I enjoyed Clark telling Chloe that he needed her, and that she was a hero too. It's one of those times in a relationship that it's good to hear what the other person feels. I also loved how Martha put Tess in her place. Almost wish she'd shot Tess with how Tess has been this season. The only thing that would've made this episode even greater was if Martha had put the book of Rao in Jonathan's Red toolbox in the barn.
9.22 "Salvation"
Opening with such a tease. First Clark's 2013 dream of Lois at the planet, and then the gift from Martha with the Red&Yellow shield on blue fabric reflection in his eye. I wonder how they will explain him not wearing it in S10. Feels like they dug themselves a hole. I was so pissed to see Zod pretending to be the Blur again, and Lois falling for it again. I'm so glad that was wrapped up in this episode and that Lois may finally know that Clark is the Blur after finding his notes from Dr. Swann and kissing the Blur. Although with Clark being stabbed with Blue kryptonite I wouldn't be surprised if they try to have Clark weasel out of admitting he is the Blur. Then it becomes Lois knows and Clark thinks Lois doesn't know.
And now Chloe returned the favor from Clark of last episode with her "I can't imagine a world without you". I'm really glad that throughout this episode it was shown that Chloe and Clark are old friends and how much they mean to each other, and how she ran off when Clark said he was going through with the Book of Rao plan. I was angry that Tess had apparently access to the Fortress and that she had gotten it from tracking Corben. Did she forget that Chloe had disabled the tracker so Tess couldn't figure it out? Also Zod disabling the fortress, is that like the most cliche thing to do in Smallville. Jor-El and the Fortress never seem to be around/working when Clark needs it. I didn't like that one bit.
I liked the recall to the ordeal Jonathan put his heart through having to stop Clark back in the day. But I did think Clark as usual in Smallville was dim and predictable in his not telling Lois the truth and trying to make things better for her by telling her to take Perry's offer, and then somehow getting pick pocketed by Lois, which still befuddles me. Then the typical Lois rescue, Zod hitting Lois so that she couldn't witness Clark rescuing her.
I'm hoping that whatever found Oliver when he was connecting the sat for Chloe are creatures that will lead to Darkseid in S10 which would be awesome. It was nice to see Zod's army finally turn against him, but will that last? With Clark not joining the rest thanks to being stabbed, I would not be surprised of Zod somehow manipulating the Kandorians into regaining his trust. I didn't expect the blue kryptonite but I'm not worried about Clark falling, there are many characters that can save him since Chloe's sat is back up, Hawkman, John Jones, etc. I shouldn't have been surprised by having so many things left unresolved (didn't even mention Tess' 'death' and the old woman that went into her room) but I thought it was very much a typical SV finale cliffhanger.
Am I excited for S10? I can't say that. Chloe's presence for it doesn't seem good and I can't imagine SV without her, but then who thought SV would last 10 seasons? Even if she had/did come back, the show needs to have a larger cast to keep the show from being too repetitive/focused on the same characters. The cameos in the S9 Finale were poor, barely worth even having them in the episode outside of listening to Clark's speech. If that was all, couldn't they have had Lana on one of those screens? She is powered after all AND RADIATING KRYPTONITE.
