September Wrap-Up

This past weekend was the inaugural Long Beach Comic-Con (about 35 miles west of me) but I didn't go due to needing to go to the West Hollywood Book Fair for a class assignment and wanting to save my fan splurging for the holiday sales. I thought I'd talk about last month's comics (at least the ones I'm following) because I have that itch to scratch and while the comics didn't wow me in September I still wanted to comment on them. WARNING: SPOILERS FROM WHAT'S HAPPENED IN THE BOOKS ABOUND

DC
Action Comics - Don't like Lois holding something against Kara, or that the other Lanes are basically evil (reminds anyone else of General Ross?) and I want to know whats wrong with Lana already.
Adventure Comics - I trust Geoff Johns but he's only there for one arc. I don't like Superboy's interest in Lex Luthor or sweeping the whole Wonder Girl/Robin relationship under the rug.
Batgirl - I don't understand why Cass needed to go, I like that Stephanie is getting a push but now with a solo title I guess thats it for any relationship with Tim while the title is going (much like Catwoman killed the BatCat mojo).
Batman and Robin - Great portrayal of Dick & Damian, introduction of new characters, fun stuff. Not as fond of Quitely's art as everyone else seems to be.
Batman Streets of Gotham - Not quite getting the purpose of this title, I don't have an attachment to it.
Blackest Night Batman - Peter Tomasi needs to be on a main Bat Book. He wrote Dick great in Nightwing & does the same here. Also best Damian outside of Morrison's.
Blackest Night Superman - So far this has been pretty pointless and just a big brawl between Kal-L and Superman/Superboy. The whole Psycho Pirate inclusion did nothing for me.
Blackest Night Titans - Again I feel like I'll need to reread this mini after Blackest Night finishes and we find out just what the black rings are doing to the dead and if it's them or not. I liked Terra against Beast Boy and that was just creepy with Donna facing her dead husband and baby.
Blackest Night - While it has been interesting, I'm wondering what they're going to do with all the character killing they're doing and I really didn't like how all of a sudden Kendra loved Carter when she was serious about Roy. They really deteriorated that interesting couple quicker than you can blink.
Booster Gold - I don't know why I still read this book. Johns has not been writing it for over a year now, they got rid of Michelle and I don't care about the Black Beetle or Rip Hunter.
Detective Comics - This has been a great story with the introduction of Alice and the art is fantastic. Unfortunately my peeve with it is that it really feels like an isolated self story (which is what it is) and I really want to see how Batwoman interacts with the rest of the Bat world.
Gotham City Sirens - While I liked the premise and the writer (Paul Dini), the book just hasn't been what I expected. I'm not a fan of the art and there's been no substance to the title so far. It's early but I have been far from satisfied with the early results.
Green Arrow/Black Canary - This book has quickly fallen off since even before Winick left. The first year was good, but since then it's felt more like the Green Arrow title did before and that was something I didn't read. Also not a fan of the shaky scribble art. I miss Cliff Chiang.
Green Lantern - It feels like Blackest Night has been around forever now that I'm wishing we could move on already. Still 5 more months of this but its staying a solid title.
Green Lantern Corps - I always find this the much more entertaining book than the solo book and with both mired in Blackest Knight, seeing the other Lanterns involvement is the draw. Again Tomasi.
Justice Society of America - I'm interested to see how the team feels once the split occurs because this opening arc has not pulled me in. Honestly since the Kingdom Come storyline with Johns the book has felt off-balance and boorish. I miss Black Adam.
Madame Xanadu - I understand that the artist is from the original incarnation of the book but I just am not fond of the scratchy art. I miss the beauty of Amy Reeder Hadley.
Power Girl - This has become my favorite book to read every month. The art is great, the stories are fun and enjoyable, and this has done a better job of establishing Power Girl as a big character than JSA has.
Red Robin - Losing interest in the book. Not fond of angsty, angry Tim. Also his name is Tim WAYNE now not Drake, I forget if its this book or another that kept refering to him as Drake.
Secret Six - It's hard to read a villain book and honestly it's probably been the cameos that Gail Simone keeps throwing in that has kept me from noticing.
Supergirl - Unlike most, I'm not that fond of Igle's art and I think it holds the book back. I'm getting a little tired of where Kara is stuck with her mother on Krypton or having to deal with Reactron and such.
Superman Secret Origin - Did we need the origin retold? Did like the nod towards a Chloe in Smallville since that name was written on Pete Ross' cast but of course the last name was hidden in the sling.
Teen Titans - It feels like a directionless book. They've turned Wonder Girl into someone who doesn't want to lead or can't handle the leadership and the rest of the team isn't that much better. I wish they'd feature Miss Martian more and I hate that they separated Ravager into a solo adventure companion story - I liked the tension between her and Wonder Girl and how Miss Martian was like the middle path between them.
Tiny Titans - This is such a fun, silly book. I desperately want to give it to my niece and nephew to read but I still think they're too young to fully appreciate the series. The art is adorably awesome.
Titans - The original premise was sound, but then it suffered from shoddy writing and art. Now it suffers from what the Justice League book suffered in, the characters are in flux with other stories and the team just isn't a team or a family at the moment.
Wonder Woman - I'm only reading this because I like the character. I figured out I like her when she's interacting with other heroes and she finally did that in a recent issue with Black Canary. I think I would've liked to have seen WW as an auxiliary member of Birds of Prey (I miss Barda. :()

Marvel
Dark Avengers - Tiring of the book, most interesting aspect is Marvel Boy sleeping with Moonstone and the Sentry with his craziness.
Dark Reign Young Avengers -
At first I thought this would be an interesting mini, but honestly tired of the plot and only the art keeps me reading.
Dark X-men Confession - This made up for Exodus and some of the things I hate in Fraction's Uncanny. I've come to enjoy Scott/Emma almost as much as I did with Scott/Jean and seeing them stay together after everything happening in the outside world was wonderful. Brilliant issue.
Fantastic Four - Finding Hickman/Eaglesham's run to be much more interesting than Millar/Hitch's hyped time on the book.
Incredible Hercules - This is just a fun read most of the time. I love seeing what mess Hercules gets into, but the solo Amadeus stories a bit of a bore.
Incredible Hulk - I'm only reading this because the Banner/Skaar duo reminds me of Caiera, the Hulk's queen that was killed and who was my favorite part of Planet Hulk. Light years better than Loeb's Hulk/Rulk thing.
Invincible Iron Man - I'm not a fan of the art and am tiring of the whole fugitive!Tony story but I did love what he confessed to Madame Masque about themselves and Pepper.
Marvel Divas - While the art remind me of Colleen Coover who I enjoy, it doesn't match the serious and depressing flow of the story. It hasn't been my type of book from the start and with the hell that Angelica is going through and then Patsy presumably in the next one not exactly something I look forward to reading.
Mighty Avengers - I like the team but they've spent too much time apart when they've just been formed. Bad direction from Slott. Also there are just too many Avengers books.
Ms Marvel - I don't know what happened to this book but this wasn't what I imagined when I had heard of War of the Marvels.
New Avengers - I'm suffering from Avengers fatigue. Also wasn't fond of Peter revealing his identity so soon after the whole OMD/BND mess.
Nova - I wish the art was a little better but I'm glad the series wasn't too involved with War of Kings.
Runaways - While I've been confused at times this creative team has been so much more enjoyable to read than Moore's run. I hate that there is going to be a "hiatus" as I am only more confused with the last issue.
Secret Warriors - This is a book I'll be dropping. I thought I'd be interested in a book with Nick Fury but there are so many characters getting involved that it's starting to get uncontrollable to manage.
Spider-Woman - Not fond of the Maleev art and while I was excited about this book about two years or so ago when it was first announced. Now with the whole world against her/not like her - it just feels too much like what Tony Stark is going through right now. I do like Agent Brand being involved, great character from Whedon's Astonishing X-men run.
Thor - I'm glad Thor finally saved Sif, but JMS is leaving soon and I wish the other books would catch up with Loki being back to male now.
Ultimate Comics Avengers - I'll be the first to say I can't stand Millar or his smug attitude. But for some reason this book has me so interested. Ultimate Red Skull's origin and the alluding to a relationship in the past between Steve and Bucky's now wife.
Uncanny X-men - Don't get the way Fraction treats Scott/Emma after the solid issue of Confession. And I'm not sure what is going on with the little piece of Void Emma still has thats keeping her in her diamond form.
X-Factor - Rumored to be ending soon or maybe a "hiatus" and I had stopped reading after the dupe baby fiasco with Madrox and Siryn. I came back because I adored young Layla Miller then and love adult Layla now.
X-Force - I love the art, and the story has been decent. I like Domino and her interacting with Wolverine, and I've become a fan of X-23. Right now it has been mired with the Dark Reign crap and the Cable future stuff but I'm hoping it'll get back on track soon.

Dark Horse
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - I like the main characters, Zayne & Jarael and its fun to read up on the adventures. Also for a non-big two comic it has been solidly consistent with its art. Good book to be my Star Wars outlet.

Invincible - The whole event in one issue threw off the momentum of the book for myself and thankfully in the aftermath of that and the battle with the old Viltrumite things seem to be heading back to the solid direction I enjoy reading.
